The Wallflower that Bloomed

Margaret McMahon

The Wallflower that Bloomed

My name is Margaret but most people call me Maggie. Some things you need to know about me. I am a 56 year old Mother of two beautiful grown up children. A happy divorcee and a lover of all things creative and artistic. My journey of self discovery started back in 2021. After being diagnosed with a hernia my mobility has been greatly affected which can take an emotional toll at times, because of this I decided to pick up a new hobby to help with my mental health while I wait on my operation. I decided to start writing.

I was always very passionate about storytelling and enjoyed hearing stories of Irish folklore so I finally decided to write a book. As a child I struggled with reading and writing growing up. I was somewhat of a Wallflower at school, always hiding at the back the of the classroom trying to hide away as best I could in order to avoid drawing any attention to myself. I was terrified teachers or classmates would notice my hesitance or inability to read or spell words correctly so it was easier to stay invisible.

The sad truth is I was too shy to ask for help. Fast forward and I am in my forties and get diagnosed with Dyslexia! Getting a diagnosis had a major impact on my self esteem and gave me a confidence boost. I realised I was intelligent and it was my Dyslexia holding me back the entire time, everything started falling into place, I went back into education and got my NVQ qualifications. I passed my driving test at age 50! Then I went onto write my first novel Crescent Witches and it’s sequel Beyond the Veil.

I wrote my novels using a tablet and dictate software, this allowed me to listen to the words rather than try and read them which is fantastic. Everyone has different learning styles and I found mine. Since writing my first and second novel I have also had my very first art exhibition at Arts for All, having my exhibition gave me such a confidence boost I feel confident in adding my own artwork to my future books as well something I would have never considered doing before due to self doubt and my own insecurities.

The message I want to give to other people is don’t let your fear hold you back. Don’t be a Wallflower let yourselves bloom and see the amazing things you can achieve when you believe in yourself.
